Learn the step-by-step process of completing EDIS after selling shares, including how to initiate EDIS, select the sold shares, verify the details, and submit the transfer instruction successfully through your MeroShare account.
How to Do EDIS After Selling Shares in Nepal – Step-by-Step Guide
If you have recently sold shares through TMS, completing EDIS (Electronic Delivery Instruction Slip) is an important step to transfer the sold shares to your broker for settlement. EDIS is completed through your Mero Share account.
This guide explains the complete EDIS process step by step, including WACC, My Holdings, and share transfer.
What is EDIS?
EDIS stands for Electronic Delivery Instruction Slip. It allows investors to electronically authorize the transfer of securities from their Demat account to the broker after selling shares.
CDSC provides EDIS through the Mero Share platform along with services such as WACC and My Holdings.
When Should You Do EDIS?
After selling shares, you should complete EDIS within the required settlement deadline. Several brokers state that EDIS should generally be completed by T+1 (the next working day).
If EDIS is not completed within the required period, the investor may face a penalty of up to 20% of the transaction amount, depending on the applicable settlement rules.
It is therefore best to complete EDIS as soon as the sold shares become available for transfer in Mero Share.
Step-by-Step Process to Do EDIS
Step 1: Log in to Mero Share
Visit the official Mero Share portal:
Log in using your DP, username, and password.
Step 2: Go to My Purchase Source
From the Mero Share dashboard:
My Purchase Source → Purchase Source
Find the company whose shares you have sold.
Select the relevant scrip and proceed with the WACC calculation.
WACC (Weighted Average Cost) is required for calculating the cost of the shares and the applicable capital gains tax.
Step 3: Update My Holdings
Next, go to:
My Holdings
Find the relevant company/share and update or confirm the holding information.
This information is used for calculating your holding period, which is relevant for capital gains tax calculation.
Some broker guidance specifically instructs investors to complete both WACC and My Holdings before proceeding with EDIS.
Step 4: Go to My EDIS
After completing the required information, go back to the Mero Share dashboard and select:
My EDIS → Transfer Shares
You will see the shares that are available for transfer following your sale.
Step 5: Select the Sold Shares
Under Transfer Shares, find the relevant transaction and click View Details.
Check the:
-
Company/scrip
-
Quantity of shares
-
Transaction details
-
Settlement information
Select the shares you need to transfer and click Proceed.
Step 6: Agree and Confirm
Review the details carefully.
Select I Agree and confirm the transfer request.
Once successfully submitted, the shares will be instructed for electronic delivery to your broker for settlement. Broker instructions similarly describe the final process as selecting the transaction, proceeding, agreeing to the terms, and confirming the transfer.
Why Is EDIS Important?
Selling shares through TMS does not mean the settlement process is completely finished. The shares sold through the market must be delivered from your Demat account to the broker through the settlement process.
EDIS provides the electronic instruction required to facilitate this delivery.
CDSC's official materials identify EDIS as one of the services available through Mero Share.
What If EDIS Is Not Showing in Mero Share?
Sometimes EDIS may not appear immediately after selling shares.
This can happen because the broker's back-office system needs to process and map the transaction before it becomes available in Mero Share. Some brokers advise checking Mero Share later in the day or on the following working day.
If you sold shares during market hours and EDIS is not yet available, wait for the transaction to be processed and check again. If the issue continues, contact your broker.
Also check whether a book closure or another corporate action is affecting the settlement of the particular security.
What Happens If You Forget EDIS?
Failing to deliver sold shares within the required settlement period can result in a close-out/penalty under the applicable settlement rules. Some brokers state that the penalty can be up to 20% of the transaction value.
If you have missed EDIS, contact your broker immediately and ask about the applicable close-out or penalty procedure.
